thoughts and things

I don’t want you to be like me – Prose for thought

I don’t want you to be like me

I don’t want you to be like me

never ending tide, awash with doubt

dress sizes, big thighs, teenage sighs

these things you could do well without

I don’t want you to be like me

too shy to open your mouth and be heard

quiet, invisible, wall flower, a bird

you should be able to tell them word for word

I don’t want you to be like me

the fat and the flab and the constant fight

what I eat, what I drink, burn it off, put back on

I want you to feel that you are just right

I don’t want you to be like me

too afraid to take chances, oppourtunities lost

to be alone, travel lands far, take what life hands

you should follow your dreams whatever the cost

I don’t want you to be like me;

please be yourself

please reach for the sun

please do everything that I should have done

  • Such a beautiful poem and so well written. I love your poetry. And I understand some of the points you’ve made, but remember that you are her mummy and she will think the world of you and be very proud to be your daughter, as she should be! You are fab! x

  • I can relate to that feeling. I often feel the same way. They do say that our children will learn more from how we feel about ourselves than anything else though so I am trying to think more positively about myself in the hope they will do the same.
